Indoor Climbing Assistants can have an inspirational effect on individuals, groups and communities. they work with participants and a range of others such as instructors, other climbing assistants, colleagues, volunteers, parents,teachers, youth workers and health professionals to ensure the climbing experience is the very best it can be.
Our courses are packed full of information, practical tips, skills and advice which will prepare you for being a qualified assistant. Delivered at climbing walls across the SW we will cover the syllabus through practical and theory sessions that aim to enhance the learning process and bring it to life. The course includes ongoing assessment. The syllabus includes:
- Technical competence (equipment, belaying, personal skills and background knowledge)
- Management and decision making (managing participants under supervision, demonstrations and understanding your role)
- Teaching and learning skills
- The climbing environment (access, etiquette and ethics)
We aim to make all of our courses enjoyable and informative. We also have a policy of making reasonable adjustments to ensure that our courses are as accessible as possible.
This is a Mountain Training qualification course. Before you book you must have:
- Registered for the Indoor Climbing Assistant Scheme with Mountain Training (Guidance Video).
- You must have experience in the basic skills (belaying, harness fitting, tying on).
- You must have recorded:
- 5 indoor climbing sessions. (There is no personal climbing requirement. You can just belay, but it is useful to have experience climbing.)
- Experience of belaying on a minimum of 5 indoor climbing sessions.
